A performance to remember

Portland, Ore. – Classical pianist and instructor Susan Chan began to learn the instrument as a toddler in Hong Kong. Since then she has won numerous competitions, and much of her talent she attributes to her mother - who was her first teacher.

I met Susan Chan in 2005 when I went looking for someone to teach Stanley Waters. She recommended his current teacher, Gloria Wiley, and was kind enough to spend an hour with Stanley critiquing his ability on the piano.

What stuck with me over the past year, however, was the story of her last performance for her mother. Susan Chan says she strives to play without ego, and that day she did so with ease, as if watching herself from above. As a Christian, Susan says music is a very spiritual and intimate experience - we thank her for playing for us and retelling her story.

What a bittersweet memory. Extremely moving.
