Thanks for your comments, Denise. The dead man was not Charlie. It might have been a better story if it were but, alas, it was not. Graveyards are amazing places to "get" stories, though. If you're interested, there's what one might call a "graveyard poem" in my second book of poetry, "The Armpit of Desire." You can check it out here: www.scottsiders.com.

I'm confused as to who was the dead man -- was it Uncle Charlie as a youth or just some poor unfortunate person murdered in the graveyard?? Living on the prairies, I'm familiar with old country graveyards. In fact recently I went to the cemetery where my grandparents etc. are buried. They recently put stones up to mark all the unmarked graves. One of these says "Innis female. Died Maymont Hotel. Early 1900's" -- no one in my own family connection knows anything about this marker. A writer myself, I thought when I saw it that there is a mystery or a story to be written there. Enjoyed your story... but would appreciate clarification. Thanks.

I avoided reading this story for quite a while, because of the title... something about it wrenched. I was right. It was the line about angels finding themselves inexplicably in graveyards. I'm not sure if i know what it means exactly, but i couldn't care less. It's beautiful.
