Common Ties Introduces Audio
Common Ties will begin publishing audio versions of stories in September 2007. We will continue to review submissions exclusively in text.
Effective immediately, we are selecting some of the stories we publish for audio and sending those writers simple recording instructions, a complimentary microphone, as well as an additional $150 if the recording is accepted. Part of the recording process includes a short telephone interview with editor Elizabeth Armstrong Moore about the story.
We realize that, for various reasons, certain writers might not wish or be able to record their stories themselves. In some cases, such as to preserve anonymity, Common Ties might use a voice actor to read these stories instead.
We still pay between $100 and $200 for most stories. As an example, if we buy a story for $150 and later ask the writer to record it, the writer will receive a total of $300 should that recording be accepted.
We will send additional information if we ask you to record your story, but the process is simple. If selected you will use the Logitech microphone that can be attached to your computer via a USB port, as well as instructions on downloading free Audacity software and using it record your story. (The software can be utilized on both PC and Mac computers.) The recording will then be transferred to a special Common Ties data site.
Most people with high-speed Internet access and a modern computer should be able to record their stories; if you are more comfortable with the assistance of a computer savvy person, we encourage you to ask a friend or relative to help with the set-up and file transfer, but our instructions are thorough.

I have yet to try it, but with gcast (http://www.gcast.com) you can record by phone. There’s another service called Evoca (http://evoca.com/) and some folks at the Public Radio Quest contest used that service

Hi,
Don’t know if you’d consider my essay for recording, but I’d love to record it.
Best,

It would add extra depth, hearing the story, especially if read by the writer. Thanks for adding this great feature to an already awesome site.

This project sounds very exciting. First I must get published with Common Ties. It would be an honour to be part of this adventure. Getting our material in front of the public is wonderful.
